Blake Babies

Knitting Factory, Main Room

I stared listening to the Blake Babies in high school after I saw the video for Out There on 120 minutes.  Of course they broke up after that album, Sunburn, and I never got to see them live. A few years later I was in Johnny's bronco and he was listening to a mix or something and I heard what sounded like the Blake Babies and said "Hey that sounds like the Blake Babies".  He said it was Julianna Hatfield, lead singer for the Blake Babies, and I thought great it was her voice that I loved so much.  Years to follow I bought her albums and saw her twice but was never completely satisfied like when I listened to Blake Babies.  To my surprise I saw the Blake Babies were back together and playing here at the Knitting Factory.  Even though I don't listen to the Blake Babies now, nor would I buy their new album, I just had to see them.

V and I found a little spot in the back corner of the balcony area where we could see the stage and where we could sit if we wanted.  We caught some of the opening band which I have forgotten the name and what they sounded like.  I remember liking it but that is all.

The Blake Babies eventually came on and the house was full.  I didn't think there would be so many people to come and see the them.  Of course the venue is small so maybe there weren't that many people.  They put on a good show and Julianna seemed much more comfortable playing with a band than playing solo.  The music was also better than her solo albums.  You have John Strohm to thank for that.  Most of the songs played were from their new album but they also played Out There and Girl In A Box which made me very happy.  They closed the show with a very mellow version of the Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated.  (It is hard to tell but that is Julianna in the middle of the picture.)
