The first and so far the only time I have been to the Knitting Factory was to see the Blake Babies. When you walk into the front door you are actually on the 3rd level. There is bar area to the immediate right and the ticket booth straight ahead. Behind the ticket booth is a set of stairs that lead to the Balcony of the Main Room. To the left a set of stairs going down to another bar and performing area. If you walk past the ticket booth you go to the first floor of the Main Room. The Main Room is small. The venue is small. The stage is small. Anywhere you stand on the first floor or the balcony is a great view. Did I mention the place is small. It really is great of course I wouldn't want to be there when a big name band is playing. From what I saw I believe the best place to be is on the balcony near the edge. There are two rows of seats and I am all about sitting during a show.
In my wandering around looking for a bathroom I saw the other 2 stages. One is in a bar on the second level, the floor below the ticket booth, the other is in a glassed in area next to the bar that is tiny. I believe it is the jazz area. I will have to check it out some time. The bar area is pretty spacious with couches and table and chairs. It would be a cool place to hang with or without music.
