Over the Labor Day weekend Vanessa and I went to Maine.  It was a trip we originally planned for Memorial Day but switched at the last minute when we found out the whales, the main reason we wanted to go, hadn't come up to Maine yet.

It was late August and the waters were still warm.  The latest reports were good for whale sightings and off we went.  We picked up a car in White Plains and stopped over in Boston for the night.  The little I saw of Boston I really liked.  The Commons were great and the little narrow roads and homes that were centuries old were amazing.  We will definitely do a weekend in Boston sometime soon.  Strict dress code policies resticted our eating choices.  We settled for a restaurant/bar that had great chowder (chow-da) and burgers.

The next morning we woke up and headed to Maine.  Kennebunkport, Maine.  Home of Papa and Barbara Bush.  Before the trip Vanessa was being harassed by coworkers asking her if she was going to stay with the Bush's since she was from Texas and all.  Between Enron and GW Texans just aren't safe outside of Texas.

A couple hours out of Boston we pulled into the bustlin' little town of Kennebunk and about 20 minutes and half a mile later over a tiny bridge into Kennebunkport.  The holiday weekend brought all the Yuppies out and the one main street was packed.  Eventually we made our way to our cabin and checked ourselves in.  The owner of the place, was very sweet and very leathery.  I think they may have some ozone problems in Maine.  After she explained where the Bush Compound was located she pointed out our cabin and we unloaded our stuff.

We had two primary reasons for going to Maine.  1) Eat lobster.  2) See whales.  And no we were not interested in seeing the Bush's.  After settling in we set off on our first mission, LOBSTER.  It is not difficult to find places serving lobster in Maine it is only hard to figure out which place you are going to eat.  Vanessa seemed to have her heart set on the Lobster Hut or Lobsters r Us or some silly name like that.  It was pretty good.  The only bad thing was lobster juice got in my beard and after about half and hour it started stinking.  I was afraid I was going to have to shave but after a good washing it was okay.  The rest of the day we spent driving around the little town and shopping for nick-knacks.  Yes we saw the Bush compound.  It wasn't all that.  That evening we barbequed and enjoyed a wonderful evening on the porch.

The next morning we woke up early for whale watching.  We grabbed some water, snacks and Dramamine for just in case.  When we got on the boat we found a spot on the upper deck and there we waited for the whale watching to begin.  The plan was to head out about an hour or so and start looking.  The trip out was nice, the wind blowing, the view of the beach and other boats and just being out on the water.  Unfortunately other passangers didn't feel the same.  We weren't but 20 or 30 minutes out when people started getting sick.  That's not a good thing when the trip is 4 or 5 hours.  Fortunately for us most of those people were on the lower deck.  I don't know how long before we started seeing any signs of whales but there was no sign of land only endless miles of water.  The captain would make announcements now and again of "Whale at 1:00" or "Whale at 2:00 or "3:00" and so on.  We had to be quick in looking because they were only up for a second and they were gone again.  To pat myself on the back I actually got pretty good a spotting whales.  I ran all over the upper deck yelling "Over there" and "Over here".  The whales never did anything spectacular like jump over the boat or spit water at us.  They basically just came up for air and that was it.  The dolphins on the other hand were quite playful and swam along side the boat.  After 5 hours or so we headed back all whale whatched out.

After we got back to shore we found a place to get Vanessa more lobster and some seafood for myself.  I think we did more driving and shopping and headed back to the cabin.  It was there that we realized we were extremely sun burnt.  For some reason it never occurred to us that we might get burnt out in the middle of the ocean on a boat with a white deck.  We treated our burns, barbequed up some desert and called it a day.  The next day, accomplishing all we came to do, we headed back and crossed off another state from our list.

I didn't take this picture.  It is a post card but it gives a pretty good idea of what Kennebunk and Kennebunkport looks like.  It really is that small.

This was the first place we ate lobster, Bubbas Lobsters or whatever..  It was a good thing we had bibs because we made a mess.

These were lobster cages outside of the restaurant.  The white shed next to Vanessa is where they keep the live lobsters.
